Bryans bump off Spanish duo

Bob and Mike Bryan’s bid to add a sixth Grand Slam title to their men’s doubles collection looked to be in reach after they swept aside Marcel Granollers and Santiago Ventura in straight sets this afternoon.

The American number one seeds produced a polished display to see off their Spanish opponents 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, 6-0 in a whisker over one and a half hours, and seal their place in the Wimbledon semi-finals together for the fifth time in their career.

Unlike the twins, who have two Australian Open titles, plus a Roland Garros, US Open and Wimbledon crown to their name, the Spanish duo had never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam and appeared to savour every moment of their Centre Court encounter.

But while the experienced pair fired down serves – 10 aces were hit throughout the match – the Spaniards struggled with their own deliveries and seemed to be forever defending breakpoints in the first set. They managed to hold and force a tie-break, but the Americans came into their own, pocketing it for the loss of just three points.

As the Bryans’ confidence grew, the Spaniards appeared to crumble. Mistakes began creeping into their play – they hit 14 errors compared to the Americans’ five – and it wasn’t long before the brothers had raced through the second and third sets dropping only two games.

No doubt the top seeds are being driven by the hunger to earn another Wimbledon title – last year they bowed out in the final to Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra. And with three 2008 ATP Masters Series titles already under their belts, they certainly look to be in fine form.
