| Friday, 27 June 2008 Written by Ian Baker Marion Bartoli, the 2007 losing ladies’ finalist, has been knocked out of this year's Championships by an American who once turned up on court in a Wonder Woman-style tennis outfit. That was Bethanie Mattek, the 23-year-old from Florida, at last year’s US Open. She is known for her extravagant dress sense but the only extravagances from her today were her excellent ground shots on Court 11. The world No. 69 triumphed 6-4, 6-1 in an entertaining match. Bartoli, the 11th seeded Frenchwoman, did not look in trouble early on as she took a 4-2 lead against the tall American. But Mattek sensationally hit back with a collection of fine drop shots and cross-court winners. Bartoli called for the trainer when 5-4 down in the first set and Mattek broke the Frenchwoman’s serve immediately after the injury time-out with some confident attacking play to take the first set. The turning point came in the third game of the second set. At 1-1, Mattek somehow came through the epic game on her own serve, with Bartoli failing to convert her ninth break point of the match. Bartoli, who performed admirably to reach the final last year, then folded. A brilliant Mattek backhand down the line just caught the line. The chair umpire correctly over-ruled the line judge’s call of “out” to award the point to the American who took a 3-1 lead. From that point, Mattek was in cruise control and she broke again to take the set 6-1 to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time and cause another shock at this year’s Championships.
