| Saturday, 28 June 2008 Written by Beci Wood Jamie Murray wrapped up a great day for the Murray household with a solid display in the men’s doubles. Hot on the heels of younger brother Andy’s victory over Tommy Haas in the singles, the 21-year-old Scot ensured two Murrays are through to the second week of the Championships as he and partner Max Mirnyi saw off James Cerretani and Victor Hanescu 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-0). The combination of Mirnyi’s booming serve and Murray’s confident net play helped the 13th seeds break down the American/Romanian pairing in two hours and four minutes, much to the delight of the lively No.1 Court crowd. A tie-break and one break of serve in the first and second set was enough to secure the efficient victory and they can enjoy a day off as they look ahead to a tricky clash on Monday against Daniel Nestor and Nemad Zimonjic, who were victorious against Rajeev Ram and Bobby Reynolds 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 7-6 (7-1). Spanish pairing Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez were fired up and raring to go during their victory over the 11th seeds Wesley Moodie and Jeff Coetzee 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Their main focus might still be in the singles competition, but big names left in the draw will surely want to avoid this unseeded pairing after this competent all-round performance. Meanwhile, top seeds Bob and Mike Bryan are already into the quarter-finals after a four set win over Czech/Australian pairing Frantisek Cermack and Jordan Kerr. The American twins took a while to get to their free-flowing best, dropping the opening set of their lunchtime clash en route to a 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory on a sun-drenched Court 14. Bob then teamed up with Samantha Stosur and Mike with Katarina Srebotnik as they secured victories over Eric Butorac and Bethanie Mattek 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-3 and Marcin Matkowski and Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-2 respectively in the second round of the mixed doubles. British pairing Jamie Delgado and Katie O’Brien had no answer to Andy Ram and Nathalie Dechy’s experienced and attacking doubles play as they went down 6-4, 6-0 while the third seeds Pavel Vizner and Kveta Peschke, of the Czech Republic, had no such trouble as they beat David Skoch and Iveta Benesova 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). Meanwhile Ana Ivanovich’s surprise conqueror, Jie Zheng, continued her fine form as she teamed up with Zi Yan to eliminate Elena Vesina and Vera Zvonereva 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the ladies' doubles.
Bethanie Mattek, of the US, and India’s Sania Mirza are also through to round three after knocking out Maria Kirilenko and Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-4, while Spanish double act Anabel Medina Garriques and Virginia Ruano Pascual looked convincing as they trounced Italian duo Sara Errani and Francesca Schiavone 6-1, 6-3. British pairing Anne Keothavong and Melanie South put up a brave fight before falling to Akgul Amanmuradova and Dayra Kustova 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, while Nathalie Dechy and Casey Dellacqua outclassed Ukranian/Polish partnership Tatiana Perebiynis and Alicia Rosolska 6-3, 6-2.
