Formal visit packages have been developed to support students
studying a range of sport related courses, marketing and customer
service at GCSE or equivalent level and above. Day visits
comprise of a Museum visit, tour and talk. All talks are accompanied
by a detailed information pack.
All talks are interactive and students are expected to participate
in discussions, offer their own opinions and make detailed
notes.
All tours visit
• No. 1 Court
• Aorangi Picnic terrace (Henman Hill)
• Millennium Building
• Press Interview Room
• BBC Television Studio or Centre Court or the Players’
Restaurant Terrace depending on time of year and building
work
The programme has been designed to be flexible so as to fit
the amount of time the group can spend at the Museum. A general
tour and Museum visit is available for all ages and can be
tailored to meet the needs of the group.
Museum visits are self guided. For a general visit teachers
should allow approximately 40 minutes for the Museum and extra
time to visit the shop. Students are asked to visit the shop
in small groups to avoid over crowding and unnecessary queuing.

MARKETING
The Museum is used as a case study to show how the principles
of marketing are put into practice.
Talk (1 hour)
During the talk students will be learning about how the Museum
puts the 4P’s into practice to develop its own marketing
mix. Recent marketing objectives are analysed to show the
processes the Museum undertakes to ensure marketing campaigns
are effective. Following the discussion, students will have
the opportunity to evaluate current marketing materials produced
by the Museum.
The support material reinforces and expands upon the information
given in the talk.
Tour (Approx. 1 hour 15mins.)
You can choose to follow either the general tour and evaluate
the product from a general visitor’s perspective or
you can follow the general tour route with adjusted information
in order to look at the development of the product.
Museum Visit (1 hour)
The Museum visit will be used to gather information and to
help students develop a feel for the Museum and the type of
marketing packages the Museum might develop. Students will
be set the task of developing a marketing package for a customer
type of their choice. They will need to consider the 4P’s
when developing the package and will decide on the most appropriate
marketing materials for the campaign.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
The programme has been designed to enable students to examine
the principles of good customer service and why this is important
to the organisation. Using the Museum as a case study, students
will learn how the Museum aims to meet and exceed its customers’
needs.
Talk (1 hour)
The talk explores the principles of good customer service
and relates these principles to the Museum. Students will
discover how the Museum aims to meet the needs of its customers
including customers with specific access requirements. After
the presentation students will be given a number of scenarios
to discuss in groups to see how they would react in given
situations.
The support material reinforces and expands upon the information
given in the talk and further develops the case study.
Tour (Approx. 1 hour 15 mins.)
Teachers can choose to follow either the general tour during
which students will find out more about the history of The
Championships and the Club, or a customer service-linked tour.
Students will visit the same sites on both tours but, on the
customer service tour, students will consider how the tour
guide can provide good customer service.
Museum (1 hour)
During the Museum visit students will be looking for examples
of good practice. They will be identifying customer types
and how the Museum can better meet their needs. Students will
be given short, group work activities to complete.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Using tennis as a case study this course has been designed
to give students a firm understanding of the history and development
of the sport.
Talk (1 hour)
The talk will examine the technological changes that have
occurred during the development of the game. Using the Museum’s
handling collection students will have the opportunity to
see how racket technology has developed and influenced the
game. The education department has a fine collection of replica
and real costume so that students can chart the progression
of tennis costume and can develop an understanding of how
social constraints impacted upon the sport.
The support material examines:
- The history of the sport in the context of the social
conditions of the time
- The impact that technological advances have had on the
sport
- The role of women in tennis
- The progression from grass roots to elite
- Nutrition and training
Tour (Approx. 1 hour 15 mins.)
The tour follows the same route as the general tour and examines
the development of The Championships, the relationship between
the Club and the Lawn Tennis Association and the development
of the grounds.
Museum (1 hour)
Students can use this time to carry out research into an area
of the sport that particularly interests them.
